Before Treatment

15 questions

Should I tell you about my heart medication?

Yes, every medication, supplement, and chronic condition. Blood thinners, beta-blockers, statins, immunosuppressants, and bisphosphonates all affect treatment planning. Bring a complete list and your Italian GP's contact.

Do I need a medical clearance from my GP?

Required for: cardiac history, blood thinners, diabetes (HbA1c), autoimmune disease, immunosuppression, recent radiation/chemo, or pregnancy. Sent to us minimum 4 weeks before travel.

Should I keep taking my blood thinner before surgery?

Don't stop without your GP's instruction. Some surgeries proceed on aspirin or low-dose anticoagulants. Others require bridging or short pause. We coordinate the protocol with your prescribing doctor.

How recent should my CBCT be?

Within 12 months is ideal. Within 24 months is acceptable if no major changes. Older or unclear scans: we re-take in-clinic on Day 2.

Can I bring my own X-rays?

Yes, DICOM digital files preferred. Email them to your patient coordinator before travel. We pre-plan from your existing scans, then verify in-clinic.

Should I get a deep cleaning before travelling?

Recommended within 4 weeks of travel. Removes plaque and reduces oral bacteria load before surgery. Done by your local Italian hygienist or in our clinic on Day 2.

Should I stop smoking before surgery?

Strongly yes. Quit minimum 2 weeks pre-op; ideally 4 weeks. Resume only after osseointegration check at month 4-6. Smoking reduces implant success by 5-10%.

Can I drink alcohol before treatment?

Avoid 48 hours pre-op (impacts coagulation). Light social drinking 4-7 days pre-op is fine. No alcohol for 7 days post-op while taking antibiotics.

Should I exercise before surgery?

Continue normal exercise up to 2 days before. Heavy lifting and high-intensity training: stop 7 days pre-op (cardiovascular load on healing). Light walking is fine.

Should I shave or wear makeup on surgery day?

Avoid heavy facial makeup on surgery day. Lip balm, mild moisturiser, and antibacterial soap are fine. Men: shave before, not on the day.

Can I take ibuprofen before surgery?

Avoid 24-48 hours pre-op (slight bleeding risk). Paracetamol/Tylenol is fine if needed for unrelated pain.

What should I eat the morning of surgery?

Light breakfast 2-3 hours before surgery time (toast, yogurt, fruit). Avoid heavy/fatty foods. Hydrate normally. If under conscious sedation, fasting protocol applies, your coordinator confirms.

Should I bring photos of teeth I want?

Yes. Reference photos are essential for Digital Smile Design. Save 5-10 examples of smiles you like, celebrity, friend, or your own old photos. We use these in mock-up.

How do you decide All-on-4 vs All-on-6?

Bone volume, bite force, parafunction (grinding), opposing arch type, and patient preference. CBCT measures bone. Bite analysis identifies grinding. We recommend, but you choose.

Will I need GA (general anaesthesia)?

Rarely. Most cases proceed with local + oral conscious sedation or IV sedation. GA is reserved for severe anxiety, complex zygomatic cases, or specific medical reasons. Hospital partner facility used.

Surgery Day

12 questions

What time should I arrive?

30 minutes before surgical slot, typically morning slots (08:00-09:00). Allows pre-op vitals check, sedation review, and final consent signing.

Will I be conscious during surgery?

Conscious sedation: drowsy and relaxed but able to respond. Most patients have no clear memory of the procedure. Local anaesthesia: fully awake, no pain. Choice depends on case complexity and your preference.

How long does All-on-4 surgery take?

Single arch: 2-3 hours. Both arches: 4-5 hours. Same-day temporary teeth fitted within the same session, adds 30-60 minutes.

How long does a single implant surgery take?

30-45 minutes for straightforward cases. Bone grafting or sinus lift adds 30-60 minutes. Complex cases involving extraction-and-immediate-load: 60-90 minutes.

Will I have stitches?

Yes, internal sutures are dissolvable. External (gum) sutures may be dissolvable or removable. Removal at Day 7-10 in-clinic. Painless to remove.

Can someone be with me during surgery?

Family/partner stays in the recovery area, not the operating suite. Your patient coordinator visits during procedure to provide updates.

What happens immediately after surgery?

30-60 minutes recovery in-clinic. We monitor vitals, provide ice packs, and discharge with written post-op instructions. Patient coordinator escorts you to your hotel.

Will I have a face bandage?

No, modern implant surgery does not require external bandaging. You leave with normal facial appearance, mild swelling possible at 24-48 hours.

How much swelling will I have?

Mild for single implants. Moderate for full-arch cases, peaks at 48-72 hours and resolves by Day 7. Ice packs for first 24 hours minimise swelling.

Can I see my temporary teeth before they're fitted?

Yes. Mock-up is shown on Day 2 before surgery. You approve shade, shape, and proportion. Final temporary is fitted same-day surgery.

What if I don't like my temporary teeth?

Adjustments made in-clinic Day 4-6. Final zirconia uses approved temporary as the template, so getting the temporary right matters. We refine until you're satisfied.

How long are temporary teeth designed to last?

4-6 months, long enough for osseointegration. They are fully functional (eating, speaking) and aesthetic, just not as strong as final zirconia.

After Surgery (Days 1-30)

11 questions

How much pain should I expect?

Mild for 2-3 days, managed with ibuprofen + paracetamol. Pain peaking on Day 2 is normal. If pain increases after Day 4 or doesn't respond to medication: contact us immediately.

How much bleeding is normal?

Light oozing for first 24 hours. Active bleeding past 24 hours: bite on a clean gauze 30 minutes; if continued, contact us. Saliva pink-tinged for 2-3 days is normal.

When can I eat?

Liquid/soft diet 24 hours: smoothies, soup, yogurt. Soft food Day 2-7: pasta, eggs, mashed vegetables. Normal food (gradually) Week 2-4. Hard/crunchy foods: after Week 4.

When can I brush my teeth?

Day 2 onwards: gentle soft-bristle brushing of unaffected teeth. Surgical site: salt-water rinses (1 tsp salt in warm water) 4-6x daily for first week. Brushing surgical area starts Week 2.

When can I exercise again?

Light walking from Day 2. Moderate activity Day 7. Heavy lifting / high-intensity training: Week 3 onwards. Avoid anything that elevates heart rate significantly for first 7 days.

When can I fly?

Day 10 typically, by which time you've had Day 7 follow-up clearance. Earlier flights possible for single-implant cases (Day 5-7). Long-haul flights are well-tolerated post-op.

Can I take antibiotics with alcohol?

No. Avoid alcohol while on the prescribed antibiotic course (typically 5-7 days). Most antibiotic-alcohol interactions cause nausea or reduced effectiveness.

How long should I take antibiotics?

Full course as prescribed (typically 5-7 days). Don't stop early even if you feel fine. Incomplete courses contribute to antibiotic resistance and infection risk.

Should I use mouthwash?

Chlorhexidine 0.2% mouthwash twice daily for first 2 weeks (we provide). Salt-water rinses also recommended. Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes during healing.

My implant feels loose, is that bad?

Brand-new (Day 1-2): some sensation of movement is normal as the temporary bridge settles. Continued looseness past Day 7 or new looseness Week 2+: WhatsApp us immediately.

I have a metallic taste, is that normal?

Mild metallic taste for first 24-48 hours is normal (mostly from chlorhexidine mouthwash and small bleeding). Persistent metallic taste past Week 1: report to us.

Long-Term Care

11 questions

How do I clean around my All-on-4?

Soft-bristle brush 2x daily. TePe interdental brushes between implants. Waterpik daily flush. Annual professional cleaning at your Italian dentist. Specialised All-on-4 hygiene kit: on request.

Do I need fluoride toothpaste?

Yes, same as natural teeth. Fluoride strengthens any remaining natural tooth structure and supports the soft tissues around implants. Regular adult-strength toothpaste is fine.

Should I use an electric toothbrush?

Either soft-bristle electric (e.g., Oral-B, Philips Sonicare) or manual is fine. Electric brushes with pressure sensors are gentler on implant gums. Replace heads every 3 months.

How often should I floss?

Daily. Around natural teeth: standard floss. Around All-on-4 prosthesis: TePe interdental brushes are easier than floss. Waterpik adds bonus flushing for hard-to-reach areas.

Can implants get cavities?

The implant fixture and zirconia crown cannot get cavities. The natural teeth adjacent to implants can, so continued routine dental care matters. Prevention is identical to natural-tooth care.

Can I get gum disease around implants?

Yes, peri-implantitis is the implant equivalent of gum disease. Risk factors: smoking, diabetes, poor hygiene. Regular professional cleaning and good home care prevent it.

How do I know if something's wrong?

Warning signs: bleeding gums around implants, looseness, persistent pain, bad smell/taste, swelling, or visible bone/implant exposure. Any of these: contact us within 24 hours.

Do I need annual scans?

Year 1: 6-month panoramic X-ray. Year 2+: annual periapical X-ray of each implant. CBCT only if specific concern. Italian dentist takes these as part of routine care.

Can I get pregnant after implants?

Yes, immediately. Implants don't affect fertility, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Pregnant patients can have routine cleaning. Major dental work (implants, sedation) typically deferred until post-partum.

Can I get implants if I'm immunocompromised?

Case-by-case. HIV (well-controlled), mild autoimmune (controlled), and managed conditions are usually fine. Active immunosuppression therapy: timing requires coordination with your treating Italian specialist.

What if my prosthesis cracks?

Send photo via WhatsApp. Minor chips: your Italian dentist repairs with composite. Larger fractures: we courier a replacement (under warranty) for fitting in Italy. Major cases: 3-day Delhi visit.
